In this article I would like to tell you how to build a vertical pallet planter with less then 50Euro!

What do you need to build a vertical pallet planter:
  • A pallet with 5 bars, surprise !(120cm X 80cm)
  • One extra bar, from somewhere else.
  • A hammer and a flat screwdriver
  • Screws or nails
  • Weed membrain (2meters)
  • Soil (20 litres)
  • Plats (Duh)
  • Paint ( if you like )
  • Sands paper sponges

Let’s begin to build a vertical pallet planter!

Step 1, inspiration.

Where did I get this idea?

Walking down the street of Barcelona I’ve seen quite often this big pallet, abandoned in the streets.
So I always though if there is a smarter way to use them.
Then after a quick reserach on Goolge I found out that I wasn’t the only one thinking creative, and I found a loooot of uses for pallets
Like on this Webside.

I have to be very honest, my first idea ever was to create a little table, followed by create a bench. After seen tutorial I found out that to creat a bench we needed a lot of new tools that probabilly I will never use again aside of this project.

Now If you don’t find it on the street, and you don’t feel this cool enough you can easily find it online, but the price of the project will raise.

My pallet has this size 120cm X 80cm.

Step 2, the design.

Here is the easier part to design but the hardest to apply.

With the hammer and screwdriver, remove bars 2 and 4 and nail or screw them below bars 1 and 3.
For bars 5 you will need that extra bar that I mention in the beginning.

Step 3, make it smooth.

I bought a couple of sponge with sands paper to make it smoother so you don´t risk to cut your hand when you operate the pallet.
If there is a little bit of dirt on the pallet, with these sponges everything will looks clean.
Afterwords the pallet looks  clean and smooth and you can also leave it like this, or otherwise you can paint it.

Step 4, paint it.

I would suggest a dark color if you balcony as a lot of lighter, or vice versa brighter if you have don t have a lot of light.
We choose this wood coloros which recall the color of the floor and also it doesnt have a strong impact on the eyes when you watch it.

Step 5, fill the space with weed membrain.

This is probabilly the trickies part, at least for us, because our stapler was bigger then the space in between the two bars, so we really had to find a creative way to fix the membrain.
We bought 2metres of this weed membrain, and it was enough.
Make sure that the membrain is really fitting in between the bars.
You can find it in any botanic shop around you area, we found this and more plant at CA’ l’AGUSTI in Barcelona.
Over here yuo can find cheap plant and all garden material.

Step 6, Then it´s plant time.

Once you selected the right plant for you, grab enough soil to fill each section and give them plenty of water.
I did a little google research to understand wich of those plant needed more direct sunlight then the others, therefore I put rosmary and lavander on top, mint and basil at the bottom and salvia and thyme.
But, there it is…

future project ?
Cost Break down for our vertical planter pallet:
  • 7 Euro for the paint ( I can use it for another pallet if i want )
  • 13 Euro for the stapler
  • 20ish for the plants.
  • 8euro for the soil.

So with a little bit of research on youtube, and more or less 50euro of investent also you can have you little pallet hort.

Final thought.

I would suggest to keep the same kind of plants: herbs, flowers or succulent just to keep the same flow all over.

Build a vertical pallet planterwas a lot of fun, leaving us a personalize piece of interior design and a big burn all over our back.

Now we are creating another one but just for decoration and smaller size. This one we will keep it just for particular plants, candles and more to personalize the terraze and give a good vibes feelings.

This is the way!
Vale, then we did it?

I wanted to have something at home where I can grow my plants, more specific a little hort where I can grow and use the herbs for my favourite dish.
Plus I didn´t want to spend too much money to find something original, and usually that is the way.

We did it as well because we have our own new place, check it out.
