Calçotada and Longboard: back to the human touch.

Fabri About Life, About Spain

In today’s post I will talk abouthaving a Calçotada and cruise with a longboard. Two things are quite popular in Barcelona.

For Eva’s Birthday

For Eva’s birthday, we usually organize something special. We love to go back to Italy and take Nonno to the mountain with the rest of the family. Their birthday is in the same week, and it’s a good way to spend some time together after Christmas. This year, unfortunately, we couldn’t travel.

Because of the pandemic and travel restrictions, it’s pretty hard to organise anything.

Lucky for us we live in Barcelona, probably one of the best cities in Europe to be in lock-down.

Tell me if I’m wrong….

We got the sea, the mountains, the parks, the history of the city and a loot of friends.

Think about it, we still have entire areas of the city to visit: crazy!!!

One of our/everyone’s favourite places to visit is Barceloneta, by the sea.

You can find people running, exercising, riding bikes, skating etc… Meanwhile on the beach people like to sit down, play music, have a drink and play volleyball.

Beach volley? Yes, all throughout the year the beach it’s filled with volleyball fields, here they just love it.

Calçotada and longboard

But first we wanted to feel cool.

In Fact we took a couple of days off from work and we finally bought two longboards.

When the longboards were delivered to our place, we thought that we bought something for kids. In Fact we read somewhere that the board has to be wide enough to fit your feet.

Turns out they are just another style of skate.

Then we found a flat area, next to Barceloneta, perfect to learn anything: from bike, to skate, to roller skate.

After a few awkward falls we were able to stand and actually do some turn.

I used to snowboard, and it’s a bit different from that, but not too much in terms of body balance.

As much space there is in between the two wheels, more stable is the board, therefore easier to stand.

Here is also my flatmate J, using a Surfboard: bigger board, more flexible wheels, probability more fun to use.

We had a Calçotada

This is a party where you cook calcots, drink beers and have fun.

Calcots are green roots, and look like spring onions but bigger. They are typical from Catalonia during this time of the year Feb/March.

You cook them for a long time, and burn them a bit.

Then you pull them from top to bottom and get to the inner part, and put it in your mouth. But before that remember to dip them into the Romesco sauce, a tomato based sauce.

It’s fun, entrating and you get dirty eating them.

I guess it’s more about the environment then actual food.

Come one … you don’t make friends with salad!!!

The Sun is out, beers are flowing, funny things to eat, and there you go, the perfect match.

I really like this kind of tradition because gets people together and reminds of the human touch, something that during the last year seems to be lost.

I’m quite happy because I keep my promise to type at least 4 articles in the next month.

Let’s go.

And this was our long weekend enjoyng Calçotada and longboard
